Having plenty of new HEPA certified replacement filters on hand is the best way to ensure the quality of the air you're breathing.  Purchasing certified true HEPA replacement air filters is not only a good idea, but also gives you peace of mind knowing you have the best filters possible. However, just because a HEPA replacement filter isn’t AHAM certified doesn’t mean it’s a cheap filter that isn’t going to work. Aller Air, for example does not participate in the AHAM certified rating system but regularly tests their true HEPA replacement filters.  Older and new Aller Air HEPA filters have proven extremely effective for allergy and asthma reduction for years, despite not being AHAM certified.  Certified or not, the most important things are to make sure you replace your HEPA air filters regularly at least once per year, ideally every 6 months, or certainly at the time specified by the manufacturer.

Also, be sure to buy the right true HEPA replacement filter for your model air purifier manufactured by the same company. Cheap aftermarket HEPA filters or the so called universal replacement air filters will not fit your air purifier properly and leave gaps where polluted air can leak out. These gaps prevent all the air from being properly filtered and will cause your air cleaner to circulate polluted air, which increases allergies.  Not only that, but cheap discount 'HEPA style' replacement air filters typically will not last as long as true HEPA filters, usually don’t clean the air as well, and may void your air purifier’s warranty! Taking the steps listed above will help ensure that your replacement filter has the best fit to minimize leakage of unpurified air full of dust, pet dander, mold and other particles, and help your air purifier properly clean and filter the air properly in the room where the purifier is located.
