Replacement Carbon Filters

Chemical vapors, VOC’s (volatile organic compounds from household paints, solvents, cleaners, smoke, etc. often cause headaches, respiratory issues, and other health problems. Many air purifier owners enjoy good air filtration and allergy or respiratory relief for a while but then those symptoms come back, and they’re not sure why. Often, however, that reappearance or increase in respiratory symptoms, new allergies or other related health problems is simply because the activated carbon filters haven’t been replaced regularly.

Like HEPA filters, even premium activated carbon air filters do not last forever. When charcoal filters aren’t replaced regularly, the carbon becomes saturated, stops absorbing pollutants and allows the polluted air to blow right through, allowing these chemical, gas & odor pollutants to be circulated in your home or office more than they would be without an air purifier fan. That is why activated charcoal filters must be replaced regularly, not just the HEPA filter.  For you and your family to continue to breathe clean, healthy, chemical and odor-free air, activated charcoal canisters or carbon filters need to be replaced at least once every one to two years, or when odors, allergies, or other health problems appear or reappear.

Buying replacement carbon filters regularly for your air purifier or filtration system can also help keep cooking, pet and other home odors under control, as well.  Some of the Austin Air air purifier filters contain premium military-grade activated carbon sheets, the same military carbon sheets used in military gas masks. This type of charcoal air filtration system will completely remove all of the chemical pollutants  and odors in your home or place of business, and prevent many allergies and sensitivities–but even military grade carbon does become saturated and must be replaced regularly, as well, to continue cleaning the air effectively. Even Aller Air or Electrocorp carbon filters, with 12-36 pounds of quality granular carbon will stop removing pollutants when they become saturated–but still allow polluted air to pass through at full speed.

For industrial situations, removing chemical vapors is often a mandatory safety measure and premium activated charcoal air filters are always used. With regard to removing industrial  or commercial pollutants, the carbon may become saturated much sooner than normal depending on the level of gas or vapor pollutants and may need replacing every 6-8 months, so be certain to monitor any industrial activated charcoal filter’s performance carefully as harmful or deadly pollutants may be allowed into the air if the filter becomes saturated. For some air purifier manufacturers, such as Aller Air and Electrocorp, you can buy replacement bulk carbon to refill the charcoal canister filters much cheaper than buying a whole new carbon filter.

When purchasing replacement activated carbon filters for home or industrial air purifiers, it’s important to make sure that it contains granular activated charcoal or a solid micro-porous block of carbon–or you may need a better air purifier or filtration system. Solid carbon block filters and premium granular activated carbon or charcoal filters (like those from Austin Air, Blueair, or Aller Air) offer much more surface area for chemicals and odors to stick to, and do a much better job at cleaning the air than cheap crushed carbon. Premium activated granular charcoal filters not only perform better, but also last longer than cheap crushed carbon filters, which saves you money on replacement  carbon air filters. You definitely want to stay with manufacturer made replacement carbon filters or bulk carbon, however–cheap, lower quality aftermarket carbon or filters will not work as well and may put you, your family or employees at risk.

Granular charcoal or a solid micro-porous block is the type of activated charcoal that is used by most of the best brands of air purifiers, brands like Aller Air, Austin Air, Blueair, Electrocorp, Tiger, and Winix, but they will only give you the best carbon air filtration possible with regular carbon filter replacements. If you buy or have an Aller Air or Electrocorp air cleaner system, again, you may be able to just refill that charcoal filter with bulk carbon, which is often much cheaper. And, if your Aller Air air cleaner has the standard Exec carbon, you can buy the stronger, premium Vocarb bulk carbon and upgrade your air purifier’s carbon filter to industrial strength, for maximum chemical and odor removal in your home.
